English Language Programmes for Academic Purposes
2-week courses throughout the year (dates and fees by arrangement)
Closed group courses for teachers, university lecturers and administrative staff who need to operate in English, either to present information in lectures, meetings, seminars etc., or to deal with everyday situations.
Course objectives:
- To provide participants with opportunities for language practice and improvement, focused mainly on grammatical / functional and idiomatic usage, but also involving fluency practice, including pronunciation, stress and intonation.
- To increase socio-cultural awareness and improve communicative competence.
- To polish professional skills, particularly those involved in making presentations and leading or participating in meetings and seminars.
- To give practical assistance with the writing of academic papers, abstracts and reports.
Course programme - main components (within a flexible timetable):
- Pre-course questionnaire.
- Diagnostic tests (vocabulary, grammar, use of English) on the first day.
- Regular grammar clinics.
- Regular input on pronunciation points.
- Intensive fluency practice / discussion sessions.
- Practice in presentation / lecturing skills + feedback from tutors.
- Individual tutorials for feedback on language points / advice and suggestions on materials for practice with presentation skills.
- Practice in the writing of academic papers, abstracts, reports etc.
- Outside visits / talks by visiting speakers.
- Access to multi-media self-study facilities (library / audio / video / computers / language laboratory / internet / e-mail) - both as part of the course timetable and during evenings and weekends. All participants receive a one-year subscription to a web-based self-study programme and advice on post-course follow-up.
